"Thy Womb" attempts at “greatness” but falls short

By Randy Renier I. Espinoza

I watched Thy Womb immediately after its official MMFF run (This is a long-overdue review, actually), in one of the few remaining cinemas that were still exhibiting the film. I would not pass up a chance to watch it on the silver screen. There were a few reasons why. First, the film was highly touted as a quality art film that had made the rounds of some international film festivals. It was directed by Cannes-winning director Brillante Mendoza. And it starred one of Philippine Cinema's screen legends, Nora Aunor. All the news and hype promised a great cinematic experience.

Written by Henry Burgos, the film is an ethno-drama that chronicles the events in the life of a Badjao couple who have been longing for a child of their own. Shalela (Aunor), a midwife, is sterile and too old to give his husband, Bangas-An (Bembol Roco), a child; the couple begin a search for a possible girl who will agree to marry Bangas-An and bear him a child. The long search then ensues. The answer to their quest comes in the person of Mersila (Lovi Poe), who is set to change the couple’s lives forever as she sees to it that once she gives Batangas-An a child, the latter shall leave Shalela for good.

“Ethnographic” Film

Interwoven within the narrative of searching and finding, the film spends ample time showing the daily routines of the couple as they start their day, cook their meals, mount their banca to either go to a midwifery appointment or go fishing, get wet and plunged into the depths of the sea as their banca capsizes, make mats (banig). Set in Tawi-Tawi, the story situates the couple’s activities of daily living within the activities of the larger Badjao community. Shalela and Bangas-An are seen mingling with the natives and partaking of some community affairs. In a manner that is distinctly and characteristically Brillante Mendoza, the film tries to make a realistic representation of the community by featuring real Badjaos and showing snippets of their culture. Thus we see how the community conduct their everyday living, centered around the sea, upon which they reside and make a living. We experience, albeit vicariously, the market scene, the mosques, Islamic rituals, and Islamic weddings. And then we see Shalela do her midwifery duties, and then we get to see an actual childbirth and a real vagina expanding to allow the release of a new-born baby.

And, as in most of Mendoza’s other features, we are treated to a handful of extraneous shots that make us question the filmmaker’s intention in interjecting them. There is a bull getting transported on a raft, that gets tossed into the water when the raft overturns, and there are a few minutes spent on the attempts to save the animal and bring it to safety. There is also a scene where Shalela, apparently looking for a place of shelter when it suddenly rains, comes to an abandoned house of worship, unmistakably a Catholic one, and sees broken pieces of religious images. If this means the Muslims crushing Catholicism, we don’t know. And there is the sporadic “popping up” of men in camouflage, running around and causing a stir among the people, and some gun shots coming out of nowhere. If this is a reference to armed conflict between government forces and some Muslim groups, we don’t know and there is never a hint as to the presence of Muslim guerilla groups. Is this a depiction of the government forces asserting its presence in the community? The film is vague on this. Interesting as they are, these “extras” do not really add up to anything.

Thy Womb is a quasi-ethnographic film that documents as it were the lives of a Badjao couple and the Badjao community in general. We get an impression that they are a simple, quiet sea folks. The protagonists look the part and blend well with the natives. The film could have made a stronger ethnographic case, though, had the actors (especially Aunor and Roco) took the time to learn the language of the locals and delivered their lines mainly in the vernacular.

While the film offers us a rare look at this group of Filipinos that we only know as the sea gypsies, it doesn’t really have much to say about the people and their aspirations. The community just seems a perfect backdrop for a story about a komadrona who, ironically, cannot bear a child of her own and has taken it upon herself to find a way to satiate her husband’s longing for a child, even if it means sharing her husband with the potential child-bearer. The story of a barren midwife is not a new concept, and the challenge is to add a twist or a garnish to it. And an ethnic flavor and setting seems the best answer. The infertility concept is elevated into a narrative for the Badjaos, a minority ethnic group. The film thus derives the majority of its supposed significance and relevance from this ethnic quality and flavor.

By juxtaposing the Badjao narrative with the narrative of an impending marital conflict that will result from a complicated ménage a trios, the film secretly, if not explicitly, attempts at greatness. It has a promising storyline that could be one for the books; the final product, though, falls short of the expectations. While the film is abundant with appropriate silent scenes -- a trademark of indie films, of course – it, however, overindulges in pointless interminable “blank” scenes where the protagonist couple are shown sailing in the waters; catching fish; or sitting, staring into nothingness, waiting for the rain to stop. Substantial rainfall shots do not even serve a metaphorical purpose for the barren protagonist, Shalela.

From the little knowledge we have of Tawi-Tawi, it gives us the impression that Tawi-Tawi is a beautiful insular place known for its seafaring communities and colorful vintas. What the film gives us, however, is a depiction that is mainly as dark and blurry as its cinematography. Most shots are spotty, lack good contrast and brightness. I personally believe that Tawi-Tawi offers more beauty than what the film would like us to see.

“No-Acting” Acting

The film succeeds, though, in the acting department. The no-acting acting that is so well loved in the indie world is here, with no less than Aunor, long been regarded as the poster girl for restrained acting, spearheading the cast. Aunor, whose output in the last 20-plus years was generally not what would be described as superlative, gives her best portrayal in recent years. Her Shalela is more convincing than her role as a judge in Naglalayag and is comparable perhaps to her role as a mute in Sidhi. Aunor, delivers, especially in her solo scenes where she, again, makes good use of her eyes to express the character's emotions and state of mind. She owns the role as she looks like a real Badjao native. She shows some awkwardness, though, when speech and body movements need to be utilized. Someone who has seen much of Aunor and the way she speaks and moves in her public interviews sees a trace of Nora Aunor, the person or the moviestar, in scenes where she does some talking and where she moves or ambulates.

The role of Shalela belongs to the same mold of roles that are tailor-made for Aunor -- an underdog, a member of a marginalized sector, or someone who has ethnic physical features – a role that is rather “safe” or within her “comfort zone.” A role that fits her well, that it seems she’ll never go wrong with it. Unlike her career-best performance in Bona, though, her Shalela lacks force and redeeming factor. While Bona self-preserves at the end, Shalela stays passive and accepts a sad future for herself. Although Aunor reminds us of her thespic prowess here, her Shalela does not surpass her at-her-peak performances, in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s, and it is not outstanding enough to be called "great acting." She may be a more-than-satisfactory Shalela, but the lukewarm reception from the public is perhaps an indication that she is lacking something. Perhaps it’s high time Aunor reinvented herself and challenged herself more with offbeat roles that will give the public a reason to rediscover her brilliance on screen.

Bembol Roco reaffirms himself as an actor. His Bangas-An is the film’s most forceful performance and is in the league of his best performances during his hey-days with Lino Brocka. He is on point in every scene and is so much into his character and never strays away from it. We see in him his love for his wife, but we also feel the greater passion to realize his longing for a child of his own. We feel his pain when Mersila tells him he has to leave his wife when she gets pregnant, but he doesn’t have a choice but to accept her terms.

Mercedes Cabral appears here but doesn’t really act. She plays the bride of a Badjao groom and her efforts are limited to dancing and a few lines. It is Lovi Poe that lends freshness to the film. She appears in three scenes only, but her presence is both remarkable and too abbreviated, two factors that make it more unforgettable. It is when she appears that the story suddenly becomes interesting, too interesting, actually, that I dare say that the story could have taken a more complex turn if it had cut many activities-of-daily-living scenes and introduced Mersila midway and given her more screen presence. By doing that, the production could have justified putting Poe side by side with Aunor on the movie poster. Mersila’s presence is so beguiling that its very transience makes the audience clamor for more. Her short but pivotal talk with Bangas-An that reveals her cunning character and the scene where she is giving birth, her face pregnant with expressions of varied emotions and laden with thoughts running through her mind amidst labor pains, are enough to stand out and steal the scenes from Roco and Aunor. Hence when the story suddenly ends with Aunor looking out the window and into the distant scenery, the audience's reaction is “’Yun na ‘yun?!” Just when the story has just really started.

Assessment

Brillante has given us some noteworthy work, but this is not one of his best efforts. Thy Womb lacks many elements that make a great film. It doesn’t really give the audience a coherent narrative on the plight of the Badjaos or a deeper understanding of Islam as a religion and how it governs the lives of its believers. I don’t know much about Islam, but I am ambivalent about the logic or reasons that inform Shalela’s decision to please her husband even at the expense of her own happiness. In this day and age, are Muslim women still too subservient to their husbands that they will even help find second wives for them just so they can have children? Feminists will, no doubt, scowl at the idea.

The film could have done the Badjaos and our Muslim brothers a favor had it offered a more optimistic and empowered depiction of the community and their women, and had it painted a more beautiful and vibrant vista of Tawi-Tawi. An indie film doesn’t have to be pessimistic all the time, and all throughout.

You said: We see remnants of Nora’s thespic talent in Shalela, but just that. It will not surpass her at-her-peak performances, in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s, and it will not make it to any list of acting bests. ~ hahahahahaha buti na lang di kagaya mo ang mga juries ng ASIA PACIFIC SCREEN AWARDS, Asian Film Awards, ASIA PACIFIC FILM FESTIVAL, DUBAI FILM FESTIVAL, INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL OF INDIA, Premio Della Critica Indipendiente At VENICE FILM FESTIVAL.... at Metro Manila Film Festival.... I don't know kung talagang marunong kang kumilatis sa marunong umarte pero natatawa ako sa yo.

  5. I believe when Guy and Brillante made the movie, they do not have to motivation to make a great movie. The pair just wanted to collaborate and it just so happen that it clicked. Now, this is also one problem when people are treated and feasted with conventional movies, they just cannot reconcile the intent of the film maker and their own bias and prejudice. And I say, magsama kayo ni Mario Baustista who is trying to be a credible film critic but cannot separate being a Vilmanian from being a film critic.

Ms Gina Pareno won 3 from Cinefan - Festival of Asian and Arab Cinema international awards from Amiens International Film Festival, Brussels International Independent Film Festival and Cinefan - Festival of Asian and Arab Cinema. Nora on the other hand won in 2 international film festival, 4 nominations and 1 pending. So sino ang mas maraming karangalan ang naibigay? Do your research before commenting, huwag maging BOBA

    5. VERSATILE ACTRESS? how do you define versatility in acting. Yung magaling sa Musical, Nora is good on that, Vilma nope. Comedy: have you seen Nora's comedy films like totoo ba ang tsismis, Ibalik ang Swerti, Annie Batungbakal, movies with DOlphy, nora showed that she can do comedy as well, si Vilma ano ba ang comedy movie nya na nakakatawa?, Horror: Nora made Magandang gabi sa inyong lahat and a segment from her move "FE, Esperanza, Caridad, she was fantastic in there, si Vilma sa HEALING, nakakatawa pa la siyang matakot. at kahit sa DRAMA kung saan magaling silang pareho pero bakit kung magkasama sila sa isang Pelikula Lamon ang ang aabutin nya? remember T-bird at Ako?, Ikaw ay Akin? hahahaha kaya bago kang mag sabi ng ONE DIMENSIONAL at VERSATILE ACTRESS check your facts first. kasi as far as I know kayo lang ang naniniwala Dun. Nora played different kinds of role: an NPA, a nun, an Ifugao woman, hostess, singer sa cabaret, movie superstar, judge, alalay, labandera, guro na na in love sa Japon, Rocker, pipi, midwife and more. She essayed all of her roles ngayon kung ang meaning mo ng VERSATILE ay iba, well di ko na problema yun kung ganun kakitid ang pag unawa mo.

    1. youre so called one dimensional acting gave Nora 5 international best actress and 10 international nominations. She doesn't need to improved because she has everything a movie actress should have. She doesn't need to say kilo-metric dialogues or shout. She can convey her emotions solely with her eyes. YOu people should accept that she is the greatest in Philippine Cinema.

      Delete
    2. Nora ISN'T the greatest actress, if she is then she should have won in all of them. Accept it she is stuck with her one dimensional acting that's all she can do and she is afraid to do other style cause she can't do it and she'll fail miserably. It takes a VERY VERY good actress who can do varieties of acting style. People who can't do kilometric dialogue just simply don't have the talent as simple as that.

O yeah one dimensional? sige paniwalain nyo sarili nyo girl. she failed miserably kaya pala she can do comedy, horror, musical and more. Vilma tried comedy, yun she failed miserably, she tried Horror sa The Healing, nakakatawa pala siyang matakot. I know you don't like Nora pero try to watch her movoes para malaman mo Acheng! Another saying: Spare the rod and spoil the child. She is not even a child anymore, Hopeless case !

Nora will have to bow down to the likes of Anita Linda (who has more than 1 memorable performance under her belt), Gina Pareno, and even Eugene Domingo.

    1. "Nora's Shalela will not make it to its Top 10 greatest acting moments." ~ Again that is your own opinion, and this is mine; I believe that Anita Linda and Gina Pareno are good actresses but being compared to the greatest actress the Philippine Cinema has ever produced is laughable. Nora has also made many Indie films from the past, Can Anita Linda or Gina Pareno be compared to Nora's Elsa in "Himala" which is also an Indie Film, or perhaps Bona? No no may friend, no yu can can't. Nora was gone for almost 8 years, came back to do an indie film and was awarded 2 international best actress awards and 5 international nominations for "thy womb" alone. If your idea of bing a good actress is to shout at the top of your lungs and show some hysterical moments, well maybe Nora's Shalela will not make it to top 10 greatest acting moments, thank God you're not a juror because a juror should be unbiased. and please do some research before making your so called review which (pardon me), is very PATHETIC!

Thanks to them both. With Ms. Nora's no-acting acting, I'd say nothing is perfect but hers is close to it.

    by Dapat lang!/Pete G. Ampoloquio, Jr. Mar 7, 2013 11:08am HKT

Ano ba ‘yan? When is this actress going to realize that time is fast running out, she better make good with her promise that she’d become a veritable professional in performing her obligations with the network?

Ang kaso, scared to the max ang aging actress when she learned of the latest development at the soap she’s starring into. Natauhan siguro ang mahilig mag-inarte at magpa-importanteng nagkakaedad ng aktres na no one’s indespensable in this business specially so now that she’s no longer as popular as she used to.

When are you going to realize that your era as the legendary actress in Philippine cinema has already reached its almost abysmal end?

Nasaan pa ba ang mga loyalista mo? Are they still alive?

Ang pagkakamali mo kasi, hindi ka na nagdiversify into another field of endeavor kaya nang mangamatay ang mga loyalista mo ay wala na silang naging kapalit.

Totoo ngang ikaw ang Pinay version ng equally great and legendary icon in America na si Judy Garland.

Both of you have reached the lofty iconic stature but sadly though, just like her, you never did have the sane -ness to value what you have become in the industry and most probably, would die a penniless has been.

Tigilan na kasi ang pag-iilusyon dahil you’re almost on the brink of becoming a veritable passe’.

    You’re pathetic!

Honestly, it’s just but a matter of time and old age would start knocking at your door. Ilang panahon na lang talaga at hindi mo na magagawang maitago ang mga gatla sa iyong noo, along with your sagging body and old age infirmity.

Kung natuto ka lang maging masinop sa iyong kinita, you would have had millions in the bank by now.

Ang kaso, lagi na’y tinatalo ka ng pag-iilusyon at pagpapantasyang you’re comparable to the phoenix who’s very much capable of resurrecting from the ashes.
    Hahahahahahahahahahaha!

    Que miserable!

Anyhow, that is your faith and all indications point to the fact that you would be a miserable has been in your looming old age.

    Di pa man, my condolences!

    ‘Yun lang!

    Manoy’s view

What’s more important—an acting award or box office success?

Box office success. It will encourage the producers to keep making movies. That keeps the industry alive. Although awards also matter, it’s not enough to sustain the industry. Both are rewarding in different ways.

Why do you think “Bwakaw” clicked abroad?

It’s a simple, well-written story, well-photographed and well-directed. It hits the right spot in your heart. It carries a universal message: love.

Do you ever plan to retire from show biz?

As long as I feel needed and wanted, I’ll keep acting. It’s my job and it’s an honest way to make a living.

Critic Jeremy Coifman describes Thy Womb as a film that "unexpectedly enchants, literally. It is a sublime slice of life, a social melodrama brilliant, subtle and strong. It is a festival of colors, a succession of scenes more beautiful than the other, and asserts that Brillante Mendoza is a major director of our time."

  35. "Thy Womb lacks many elements that make a great film. It doesn’t really give the audience a coherent narrative on the plight of the Badjaos or a deeper understanding of Islam as a religion and how it governs the lives of its believers." Well if you are more interested in understanding Badjaos or Islam, you shouldn't have gone to the movies. Read a book, watch historical channels. This is an epic film, don't mess with it.
